21st Century Academic Vocabulary
Most teachers include vocabulary activities in their lesson plans every week. For years, our kids have been writing definitions and using words in sentences. So, why are the words not sticking? How can our students make 100 on vocabulary tests but not be able to use those same words effectively in every day conversation? Why don't our kiddos recognize those words on standardized tests?
Perhaps we need to change the way we teach words, focusing not on memorization, but on making the words stick. Both research and teacher experience have shown that embedding the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creation) into Marzano's Six Steps of Effective Vocabulary Instruction is a great strategy for making words stick with our kiddos. We hope you will utilize the resources linked at the top of the page and listed below to help you implement effective vocabulary instruction in your classroom.
